Daily human needs for folic acid are about 400 micrograms.
Women in pregnancy are recommended increased intake of folic acid (up to 800 micrograms per day) to protect the fetus from various defects and mental retardation.
Smokers and people who would have to intake greater amounts of folic acid, should prior consult a doctor.
NOTE: People that are suspected to be a lack of vitamin B12 SHOULD NOT consume extra folic acid without consulting a doctor.
