Arsenic

Biological role

Arsenic is considered to be very toxic to the human body. In nature there are two types of arsenic:

  • organically bound, arsenate (5-valent form) is an essential nutrient that comes from plants and animals as well as elemental arsenic are not toxic.
  • inorganic (3-valent form, for example arsenic(III)-oxide) is a toxic substance that comes from the soil, water or contaminated food and is very toxic even in very small quantities.

Inorganic arsenic in the body accumulates in the skin, hair, nails and internal organs.
